1972 Olds Cutlass Convertible First Drive

AKA “Project Tuffy” according to my 5 year old!

but we don’t know why.

In a leap of faith, I abandoned my plans for building a mean street machine, such as a 1971 Torino sports roof, and veered off into a completely different direction.  After a few months of searching, I came across a clean 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Convertible (Cutlass Supreme Technically). The car was all original, rust free, and mostly restored with the original rebuilt Rocket 350 V8.

The car is it’s original color of Matador Red, which quickly resulted in the car getting its real nickname of “Red Bull”

The First Day

If I’m being honest, I am completely happy with taking a new direction for my next project! This car can fit the whole crew, and cruising topless brings a huge smile on everyone’s face that rides in the car!

My very first stop after purchasing the car was a gas station before hitting the interstate, and all three people at the gas pumps next to me had to stop and come ask about the car. After hitting the interstate drop-top style I lit up a victory cigar, opened a Vernors, donned my hat and put on my shades. I couldn’t even keep track of the number of thumbs up I got cruising up I-65. Cruising at 65-70 MPH in the right lane I even had people slowing down to look and caused a mild traffic backup! the best part, I had my 5 year old riding in the car with me! Pure bliss.

The very first day I fixed the hood hinges and adjusted one fender, lubricated some hinges and cleaned the car inside and out. The ritual cleaning, like the first time you bath your new baby. That night we drove it down to our local fireworks display with my family and half of our friends family in the car. We rolled up to the parking lot with the top down and immediately heard someone yell “Look at that car!”

So Now What?!?!?!

While I’m happy with the car, the question still remains, what do I do with it! I had originally planned on a project that would create a high performance retro-mod with a turbocharged fuel injected motor and a black on black lowered look, but that doesn’t really fit this car (necessarily). So what should I do!? And the car needs a name! Back to the drawing board.

Have an idea for what this car should be? Leave us a comment!
